The short version

A full family bathroom takes two to three weeks. A renovation that keeps the layout takes one to two. A cloakroom takes two to five days. An en-suite built from scratch, including the stud wall, takes three to four weeks. We give you a programme with the quote and tell you in advance about the days the water or the toilet will be off.

Week one: strip-out and first fix

The old suite, tiles and floor come out and go in the van. We check the floor and walls, replace anything rotten, run new pipework and waste, and get the registered electrician in for any new cables. Walls are boarded and the wet areas tanked. The room looks worse before it looks better; this is normal.

Week two: tiling and fitting

Floors first, then walls, with the setting-out done so cuts are even. Grouting follows a day later. Then the shower tray or bath goes in, followed by the WC, basin or vanity, screen and brassware. Towel rails, mirrors and lights are fitted once the tiling is finished.

Week three: carpentry, decoration and hand-over

Boxing-in, bath panels, the door re-hung if needed, skirting and architrave, then filling, caulking and two coats of paint. Silicone goes in last, once everything is dry and clean. We walk round with you, test everything and hand over a finished room.

Living without a bathroom

If you have a second bathroom or WC, the disruption is small. If you do not, we plan the sequence so the toilet is back in use each evening wherever possible and the shower is out of action for the shortest time we can manage. We tell you the exact days before we start.

What slows a job down

Fittings arriving late or damaged, decisions on tiles and colours left until the last minute, and surprises behind old walls. We check the order before you buy, ask for decisions early and show you anything unexpected straight away, so delays are rare.
